Preparing For Blood Donation

Saving Lives- SensationsXtreme

Introduction:

Blood is a body fluid in animals that delivers necessary substances such as nutrients and oxygen to the cells and transports metabolic waste products away from those same cells. Blood is an essential part of human body without which no human can survive.
There are 4 main Blood Groups In the ABO system:
  • Group A – It has only the A antigen on red cells (& B antibody in the plasma)
  • Group B – It has only the B antigen on red cells (& A antibody in the plasma)
  • Group AB – It has both A and B antigens on red cells (neither A nor B antibody in the plasma)
  • Group O – has neither A nor B antigens on red cells (but both A and B antibody are in the plasma)
The blood group of a newborn depends on genes inherited from the parents.
Type O negative blood type is universal red blood donor; it means type O can be donated to all blood types.  AB blood type is universal plasma donor.
These blood groups are further divided into positive (+) and negative (-), these signs representing either presence or absence of Rh factor. Rh positive (present) are generally given to other Rh positive groups and Rh negative (absent) are given to Rh negative (-).
